Clay Travis Blasts June Article 'Guaranteeing' COVID Would Kill CFB Players

Clay Travis: “This was the most irresponsible single piece of journalism having to do with college football that was published anywhere in the country. CBS Sports should apologize to their entire audience because they wrote a piece based on University of Illinois computer science professional Sheldon Jacobson saying ‘I guarantee someone is going to die if they play a college football season.’ He also said the FBS level would see ‘3-7 deaths’. ‘A few of them could end up in a hospital and you’ll have a small number who could die. I don’t want to sugarcoat it for you, I just want to give you the facts’… IT DIDN’T HAPPEN. He said he only wanted to share the ‘facts’ with you and he guaranteed a player would die. First of all, a Joe Namath-like guarantee that a player would die if the college football season happens is an insane, and superbly dumb thing to say… I don’t even blame this idiot computer science professor at the University of Illinois, I blame CBS Sports for running this article on June 30th because the evidence was readily apparent that this was NOT true. No players playing in FBS died this year, and I’m not even sure if there was a single serious hospitalization. I’ve been telling you for months that there was far more danger from the seasonal flu to your average high school or college kid than there was from COVID in terms of death, and we’ve never canceled a season because of the flu. Thankfully, college football leadership got the right decision. The college football media should be ashamed of itself, and the same goes for the ‘Corona Bros’ in the sports media who tried to spread ‘Fear Porn’ and convince everybody that it was impossible to play a safe season. They were one billion percent WRONG. CBS Sports should apologize for the Fear Porn that they shared, and they should feel awful for running an article like that without support. These articles were not rooted in fact, but had a tangible impact in a very real way in College Football’s decision making. They used irresponsible language that shouldn’t have passed the editing.” (Full Video Above)

Listen to Clay Travis blasts CBS Sports for running with an article back in June of 2020 that used quotes from a computer science professor at the University of Illinois who ‘guaranteed’ that college football players would die from COVID-19 if the NCAA decided to put their season on.

Jacobsen is quoted in the article saying:

"A few of them could end up in the hospital and you'll have a small number who could die… I don't want to sugar coat it for you, I just want to give you the facts… If everybody comes together under normal circumstances, we'll probably see that kind of outcome… I guarantee someone is going to die. The virus does not discriminate."

We know now that six months later Jacobsen’s ‘guarantee’ didn’t come true, thankfully, spurring Clay to proclaim that CBS Sports should have to issue an apology for writing such irresponsible ‘fear porn’, and disguising it as ‘fact.’
