Why the Dolphins Will Soon Be Trapped With Tua Tagovailoa

Colin Cowherd: “Sometimes ‘pretty good’ is good enough, but ‘pretty good’ is not good enough in the NFL at quarterback. Stafford and Joe Burrow are not ‘pretty good.’ If you go look at the last 10-15 years of who is winning Super Bowls there is a lot of Peyton Manning and a lot of Tom Brady… ‘pretty good’ is Kirk Cousins. Last year Tua had a defensive coach, bad o-line, limited weapons, and not much experience, but his numbers weren’t terrible, they were kind of competent. Eighty-nine passer rating, 66% completion percentage, won 13, lost 8. Now he’s got great weapons, insane weapons, an offensive coach who he loves, and he’s better. His career numbers are not terrible and they’re ‘OK’… How are you going to get rid of that? That’s going to divide the room. That’s Minnesota with Kirk Cousins. Those aren’t great or elite numbers but they’re ‘good’. In the NFC I would be like ‘I’ll stick with him’, but look at the AFC? In his own division he has Josh Allen and Bill Belichick. One division in the AFC has Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Russell Wilson, and Derek Carr. There’s Joe Burrow who looks like a star. Matt Ryan has now come over. The top 7 or 8 quarterbacks in the AFC are now all elite, the top 7 or 8 in the NFC are not, there are 3 or 4 ‘elite’ and 3 or 4 ‘good’. You can get trapped in ‘pretty good’, and at the end of this year with Tua you’re going to look up and think ‘this is pretty good’, and I don’t think you’re necessarily wrong. I do not think Tua is elite, but you can win games with Jared Goff who had an elite coach, elite weapons, and an elite o-line. Everyone would take ‘pretty good’ in Miami right now, but Andy Reid moved off that with Alex Smith and started winning Super Bowls. You’re going to get really clear and obvious rewards with your franchise but be careful, this is where Minnesota is at. ‘Pretty good’ can be a rough place to be even though in the moment you would take it.” (Full Segment Above)

Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why he thinks the Miami Dolphins should be very wary of Tua Tagovailoa becoming the next Kirk Cousins type quarterback talent, as a ‘pretty good’ contributor and respectable player, but one that will never be capable enough to win big in an AFC that boasts some of the most gifted quarterbacks ever.

Check out the segment above as Colin warns the Dolphins on settling for slightly above-average numbers that Tua is equipped of giving them that are just good enough to keep him around on a fledgling franchise.
