Colin Cowherd: “Johnny Manziel, don’t like him. Jameis Winston, Baker Mayfield, Zach Wilson... But the one guy I really liked that didn’t work was Sam Darnold. Tough, coachable, teammates loved him, basically hero ball at USC to save a bad coaching staff. Always had a quirky delivery, but he’s never had an elite coach, he’s always been running for his life, and hasn’t had many great players around him. Where you land in the NFL matters and Sam Darnold is not talented enough to overcome bad coaching, bad o-lines, and chaos. But Kyle Shanahan liked him and they don’t currently like Trey Lance. They think Darnold could win a lot of games. Is Kyle Shanahan the last great coach in our ‘big 3’ sports world [NFL, NBA, MLB] not to have a ring? I would say that’s true. Could Sam go 4-0 given the opportunity in this season with Brock Purdy hurt? Absolutely. Baker Mayfield got an offensive coach, a great offensive line, massive protection, Nick Chubb, excellent weapons, and Baker screwed it up. Sam never had a chance. I don’t think Sam is great, certainly not great enough to overcome mayhem, but that’s for guys like Herbert, Hurts, Lamar, Mahomes, and there’s only about seven of those on the planet. His delivery is slow, and when rushed he tends to try to play a hero and makes bad decisions. Sam is a big, strong, athletic, great kid, but his delivery is a little slow, and when pressured, he’ll uncork about two throws a game that are really bad, but selfishly I’d love to see Darnold at least be equipped and surrounded with the same staff Baker got for a couple years.” (Full Segment Above)
