Bucky Brooks: “It was a necessary move from the Carolina Panthers to sure up the quarterback room but I think it will be interesting to see Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold in training camp. The Browns are taking on $10 million [of Baker’s contract], and the Panthers are paying Mayfield $5 million, which is backup money. This could legitimately be a quarterback competition. Now we get an opportunity to see these guys throw every day. It’s one thing to hear about somebody as an evaluator, but it’s another thing to put them on the same field throwing back to back. Sam Darnold is a bigger, stronger, faster prospect. Mayfield on some accounts has played better in the league but Baker Mayfield has also had a better supporting cast. He had a great offensive line, two Pro Bowl running backs, and two Pro Bowl wide receivers, and he still was a bottom-third quarterback. Sam Darnold has never been afforded that opportunity. Now when you have an even-steven contest, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I would say Baker is behind the eight ball because he’s joining a team in July. He’ll have to learn the playbook in training camp. Sam Darnold knows the playbook and Darnold has already built relationships with teammates. We can say that the reason why Baker is out of Cleveland is not because of how he played on the field but how he got along with others. The quarterback position is a leadership position. You have to get along, enlighten, and inspire your teammates. Is Baker going to be a great teammate? What if Baker doesn’t win it? Can he be a good backup?? The backup is supposed to support the starter, the backup can’t be pining for the starter’s job. In wrestling terms this could be a ‘loser leaves town match.’ Whoever wins the quarterback position stays and the loser has to go somewhere else. I think Sam Darnold has an opportunity to win this job and I think Sam Darnold would be a much better performer in front of Baker Mayfield. All the cache about being the number one pick goes by the wayside when you go somewhere else. You’re just like everyone else.” (Full Segment Above)
