Colin Cowherd Doubts Legitimacy of Matt LaFleur: 'What Are His Strengths?'

Colin Cowherd: “I would argue today that there are eight coaches that I consider great coaches and all of them have something that I can wrap my arms around that makes them a great coach. To me, the great coaches in the NFL are Sean McDermott, Mike Vrabel, Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh, Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Andy Reid, and Bill Belichick. All of them have something we know to be true. Belichick is the greatest defensive coach ever. Andy Reid is the great play designer. Shanahan is the Brainiac. Tomlin is an emotional motivating coach. Mike Vrabel is similar to Tomlin and holds it together as a great culture builder. Sean McVay is the young genius. Sean McDermott is the best young defensive coach in football. John Harbaugh is also a great culture builder. What about Matt LaFleur? I don’t have LaFleur on this. LaFleur came into this league as one of the ‘Three Musketeers’ in Washington with Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay. Privately all of them would admit that Shanahan schematically is A++. McVay is known as great in front of people, great personality, BIG personality, amazing positive culture builder. LaFleur is neither. What is his strength? I know what you’re saying – ‘Well, look at his record since he arrived, it’s better than Mike McCarthy’s!’ Mike McCarthy had to face Jim Caldwell and Matthew Stafford in Detroit, they once won 11 games in a season together. LaFleur faced Matt Patricia. McCarthy faced Jay Cutler in Chicago, he’s pretty good. Matt LaFleur got Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields. Minnesota peaked before Matt LaFleur got there. Sean McDermott is young and I give HIM a lot of credit. Why? Because Sean McDermott in Buffalo got Tyrod Taylor to the playoffs, was in a division with Belichick and Brady, oversaw the development of Josh Allen, and created a great defensive front. Matt Lafleur inherited a worse division, inherited a good roster, inherited a Hall of Fame quarterback, and because he’s winning more in the regular season we think he’s a better coach than McCarthy. McCarthy dominated that division too and it was better. McDermott ‘built’ things, LaFleur ‘inherited’ things. It doesn’t mean you can’t be great but there’s no proof that you are. LaFleur has a losing record in the playoffs and he’s losing at home as a favorite with Aaron Rodgers.” (Full Segment Above)
