Clay Travis: “How confident are you that come September 10th the NFL will be underway and everybody out there will be able to watch?”
President Trump: “Well they want to open, and they want to open badly. They have been working with government. I would say this, if they don’t stand for the National Anthem I hope they don’t open, but other than that I would love to see them open, and we’re doing everything possible for getting them open. They can protest in other ways. They shouldn’t protest our flag or our country.”
Clay Travis: “Have you talked with owners about your hope that they’re going to stand?”
President Trump: “They know my feelings very well, and they’ve been expressed. It’s been horrible for basketball. Look at the basketball ratings, they’re down to very, very low numbers and people are angry about it. They have enough politics with guys like me, they don’t need more as they’re going up for the shot. There was a nastiness about the NBA, and the way it was done too. The NBA is in trouble, and I think it is in big trouble; bigger trouble than they understand. Frankly, ice hockey, which is doing very well, didn’t do that, and respected the morays, and respected what they should be doing, and are actually doing very well from what I’m told… I did not like what baseball did even a little bit. You have to stand for your flag, and you have to respect your flag and your country. You’re making millions of dollars a year to be playing a sport that you’d be playing anyway. You’d be playing it on the weekends. They have to respect their country, and if they don’t, frankly, if the NFL didn’t open I’d be very happy if they don’t stand for the flag and stand strongly, I'd be very happy if they didn’t open. With that being said, I’d love to see them open.” (Audio Segment Above, Full Interview Below)
Listen to President Donald Trump join Outkick the Coverage with Clay Travis to discuss his expectations of the National Football League opening up Week 1 play as scheduled on September 10th.
Even though Trump obviously wants America’s most popular sport to return, and ‘open’ like other professional sports league have boldy done in the shadows of the coronavirus pandemic, the President tells Clay that he’d also be happy to see it NOT open as well, if NFL players are planning to continue kneeling in protests during the National Anthem.
Check out the segment above as President Trump details why the National Anthem protests are killing television ratings and hurting sports leagues, as Trump believes Americans are tired of their already politically saturated lives infiltrating their sports entertainment.
