Brian Kelly Opens Up About His Decision to Leave Notre Dame For LSU

Listen to former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly join The Dan Patrick Show to open up about his decision to leave the Fighting Irish after 12 years to join the LSU Tigers in the wake of Ed Orgeron’s purging.

Kelly followed in the footsteps of former Oklahoma and now-USC head coach, Lincoln Riley, as a big name head coach who shockingly jumped from one blue blood program to another, but few had the Massachusetts native who had successful stints at Central Michigan and Cincinnati, to go with his fruitful time at Notre Dame, to jump that far south to one of the NCAA’s toughest jobs.

Orgeron, a former LSU graduate, who had been with the LSU program for years before he was ever the head coach, was bagged not even three years after winning the National Championship with perhaps the most talented college football team of all time.

Kelly made a National Championship appearance in 2012, and made the College Football Playoff in 2020, but was blown out and humiliated in both contests.

Kelly will join an already stacked SEC West with top-shelf coaches the likes of Nick Saban, Jimbo Fisher, Lane Kiffin, and Mike Leach.

The move wasn’t met with glowing endorsements, however, as former Notre Dame quarterback and Fox Sports Radio host, Brady Quinn, called Kelly’s move to Baton Rouge ‘classless’ and ‘conniving’ considering the Fighting Irish currently sit at 11-1 and ranked no. 6 in the College Football Playoff, and still very much alive for the Playoff if any two of three teams -- Michigan, Oklahoma State, and Cincinnati -- were to lose in their conference championships.
