Rob Parker: Luka Doncic Doesn't Play a Winning Style of Basketball

Rob Parker: “You’re not going to win a championship with just Luka doing this, so I’ll be the first person to say that. If it’s only going to be about putting up numbers and winning regular-season games, and you want to keep that guy around, that’s fine, but if he can’t give you something else on the other part of the court and help you and you can’t win, then it doesn’t make sense to have him. It doesn’t matter if you’re scoring 35 points a night if you’re giving up 34 on the other end. The Suns abused Luka defensively in game 2. You need more guys around him but you also need more from Luka. Defensively that is not good enough. It doesn’t equate to winning and you got blown out and lost by 20 in Game 2. You’re not going to win anything when they take advantage of Luka like that defensively. Listen, I get the offense and I get the numbers he’s putting up. I get why all the analytics and the geeks go gaga over him, and he’s a tremendous player – ON THE OFFENSIVE END. But that’s not going to get you anything. I’m not asking him to be a stopper or shut out the other guy but it can’t be that easy where they can put up 34 points in the second half on your star player. The 35 points on offense become moot, null, and void, and don’t mean anything. You have to figure out a way to make him adequate on defense so he’s not exploited like that. You can keep him all you want, but Dallas ain’t going to be winning no championship when you got your star player scoring 35 in a game, and giving up 34 in the second half.” (Full Audio Above)

Listen to Rob Parker explain why he doesn’t think the Mavericks will ever win a championship with Luka Doncic as their feature player, as Rob believes Doncic’s defensive liabilities are preventing Dallas from taking the next step as a contender.

Check out the audio above as Rob and Andy Furman, guest-hosting for Chris Broussard, get into a heated debate on the future of Doncic, and whether his critics will start to grow if Dallas continues to fall short in the NBA Playoffs every year.
