Mike McDaniel on Tua Tagovailoa: “What I’ve seen is there is a skill set that I’m very familiar with that is very successful in this offense. You’re seeing a very accurate passer that receivers would love to catch footballs from. Tight spirals and accurate throws are huge for run after the catch yardage. What that means for an offense? If you have people who can run after the catch, that’s an outstanding skill set for him. I also see some great athleticism, some natural pocket movement, and really a tough competitor who is willing to stand in there when necessary.”
Doug Gottlieb: “Do you buy that’s actually what he believes? Here would be my pushback. 1) What is he supposed to say? 2) It’s pretty obvious that the owner and GM who hired him believe in Tua so you kind of have to get on board. This happens at everybody’s work. Pick a network. Do you really think that everybody at NBC wants to promote every Olympics? At some point, you’re all going to have to swallow your pride and make it work. There wasn’t an NFL guy I talked to last week that thought Tua Tagovailoa was a big-time quarterback. None of them. But the owner likes him, the GM likes him, he’s been the starter for two years, and he’s going to get the first opportunity to fail. I do think there are some things that Mike McDaniel is right about – he is seen as a pretty good leader, and he is accurate – the problem is he just does not have ‘wow’ plays, and I don’t think he’s a great athlete.” (Full Audio Above)
Listen to Doug Gottlieb explain why he doesn’t buy the endorsement new Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel gave incumbent starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, as Gottlieb really doesn’t see any special traits in Tua whatsoever.
