Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher is reportedly "finalizing a deal" to hire former collegiate and NFL head coach Bobby Petrino as an offensive coordinator, sources with knowledge of the deal told ESPN's Chris Low.
Petrino, who had previously served as the head coach at Louisville, Arkansas and Western Kentucky, as well as one season with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, served as the head coach at Missouri State for the past three seasons and hired to become UNLV's offensive coordinator several weeks ago.
"Jimbo Fisher is finalizing a deal to hire Bobby Petrino as @AggieFootball’s OC and Petrino will take over play-calling duties, sources tell ESPN," Low tweeted. "Petrino, one of the top offensive minds in football, was briefly OC at UNLV after spending last three seasons at Missouri State."
Petrino is regarded as a top offensive-minded coach but has had numerous tenures end in controversy at both the collegiate and NFL levels.
The 61-year-old suddenly resigned 13 games into his first season with the Falcons in order to take head coaching position at Arkansas, where he went 34-17 (17-15 SEC) during four seasons before being fired amid accusations that he unfairly hired his mistress and intentionally mislead his boss about their relationship following a motorcycle accident the two were involved in in 2012.
