Kliff Kingsbury, Arizona Cardinals Make Decision on Coaching Future

Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury has agreed to a new contract extension.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported news of the agreement on Wednesday, prior to official confirmation from the team in a news release shared on its official website.

"The leadership of both Steve and Kliff have been key factors in the team's turnaround over the last three seasons," Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said. "We are all looking forward to continuing that progress and recognize these two individuals will be a big part of achieving our long-term goals as an organization."

Kingsbury, 42, is coming off his best season as the Cardinals' head coach since being hired in 2019. Arizona finished the 2021 season with an 11-6 record for second-place in the NFC West, before being eliminated by the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Wild Card playoff round.

The Cardinals have improved their record from the previous season during each of Kingsbury's past two seasons, finishing with a 5-10-1 record during his first season and 8-8 in 2020.

The reported extension comes days after Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray's agent, Eric Burkhardt, who also represents Kingsbury, released a lengthy statement regarding Murray's displeasure with his own contract status.

In the statement addressed to Cardinals fans, Burkhardt confirms Murray "absolutely wants to be your long term QB" and "desperately wants to win the Super Bowl," but claimed "it is now simply up to the Cardinals to decide if they prioritize" signing him to a contract extension.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter shared the statement from Burkhardt on his verified Twitter account Monday (February 28) morning, which confirmed that he and his client "sent a detailed contract proposal to the organization."

"Looking ahead, Kyler believes that in order to consistently compete for championships, and ultimately deliver the valley their first super Bowl in 33+ years, there needs to be long term stability for both the organization and himself to overtly communicate Kyler's desire to be the Cardinals long term QB," Burkhardt wrote.

Murray's future has been a topic of discussion throughout the Cardinals' offseason following a cryptic move in which he deleted all photos and references to the organization from his verified Instagram account, leading to reports of his displeasure with the team.

The former Heisman Trophy winner will enter his fourth season in 2022 and is still playing on his rookie contract, with Arizona expected to pick up his $5.5 million option.
